The People's Grocery

In West Oakland, California, where liquor stores have replaced markets, People’s Grocery is creating a healthy alternative, offering access to organic produce. Through urban gardens and local farms, People's Grocery supports a culture based on connection to the land, sustainable agricultural practices, and regenerating community.

The People's Grocery is an amazing project! Much respect to you and your team. I will be posting your video on my blog www.LotusHaus.com Peace and Blessings ~Joanna

This is a great idea. You are really looking into the roots of the problem and most importantly getting people educated about their food. Best of luck!

Really amazing project, needs to happen in so many places. I appreciate the effort to "regenerate connection to nature" instead of moving poor communities toward big box retail which doesn't actually help the community at all. Would love to work on something like this, know of anything in Brooklyn? I'm also curious to know how this project has impacted the urban space and what infrastructure it takes in order to work. Do the areas for growing and/or selling create new ways the community can engage its public space?

Hey Andrea! There is SustainbleFlatbush.org - and we have quite a few Brooklyn people on hyperlocavore.com. We help people form and maintain yard sharing groups to grow their own.
There's also a urban farming project down in Red Hook called something "assets" -

Well done to you for doing such good and important work.
Blessings to you and all involved.......:-)

This sounds fantastic. It is very inspiring and such a perfect idea. Kudos!

Wondrous project. How do we begin? Even in area's that have large food stores many can not afford to buy there. Plus it is a great community project. getting people to think healthy, eat healthy, and cocreate a healthy progressive life and community...
Great job! How inspiring!
Jeff
