The Power of Masses
Anshu Gupta, executive director of a volunteer-run recycling program in New Delhi, explains that the key to acting on a large scale is accommodating everybody's strengths. Inviting people to offer whatever skills they have in service to a cause empowers both the individual and the movement. Change is limited when the masses underestimate their own potential.
Anshu Gupta is an Ashoka Fellow and the executive
director of Goonj, a primarily volunteer run organization based in New
Delhi that provides clothes and other basic amenities to millions
across India by turning one person's waste into a resource for another.
In 1998 Anshu left his job as a manager of corporate communications in
a large Indian company to found Goonj and travel India in order to
understand the needs of the people of his country.
