Getting to the Root of the Problem.
Keying in on ShantayaMeeera's thoughts above - "once we become aware .... WE CAN CHOOSE if to FIGHT or to STOP and CREATE something completely new inside our self and around us."
I ran across a likeminded article to share. Here are some excerpts:
There are endless people who say...
"It's the economic system!"
"It's the government!"
"It's the religions!"
None of these things are at the root of the problem. How do I know this? Because none of these things are actually real. History has been dominated by these three systems but what do they all have in common... ?
They are all faith-based belief systems.
Economics is not actually a science, the entire system is based on faith. If no one believed the money they or anyone else had was worth anything, it would not be worth anything. Are you starting to get the picture? It's a belief system, it's based on faith and nothing more.
Many people realize this, what most do not realize is that "government" is the same thing. There is no such thing as a "government." Government is an idea, to quote GHWB on the New World Order, "It is a big idea." People think that the government is something real, they see the huge buildings and pillars and statues and they feel like it is a separate entity unto itself which rules over things. This is an illusion. And this is where we start to get to the root of the problem...
You've been tricked into hypostatizing so many beliefs to the point where you actually think that they are what you are. I am here to tell you that you are not your beliefs, you need to wake up to this, this is the only thing keeping you from being truly free. Everyone needs to realize this, stop believing in the system and realize there is no system. Stop believing and start living! ...
"Trust the quiet inner voice that tells you what to do. You hold your life in your hands, don't entrust it to anyone else, least of all to your chosen leaders. BE YOURSELF! Any number of great men have told you that." - Wilhelm Reich
(end of excerpts)
Makes good sense to me, how about you?

YES ...
we do have the POWER........ to STOP first .....
..........................................................
STOP STOP STOP STOP STOP ...(brithing).....(brithing)........and ..........
CHOOSE.
Whenever we become conscious-aware in all the actions we do in the daily life, in the present moment ... yes .... we are able to CHOOSE HOW to USE the POWER we all have.
That is the INTELLIGENCE ... ad Not to forget, always connected in the HEART.
That means not to be ruled by our programmed mind, that witch was given to us during the first 7 years of our existence since we where born and also later. That means to WAKE UP, to be able to CHOOSE how to manage that POWER we all have to make a 180 degree turn towards existence.
We need to learn to recognize these programs in the mind, to TRANSFORM the old way (the separate, fighting way) into something NEW. Before all of these can happen, we need to recognize in our self where and when we divide and fight inside our heads, first. It all starts there ... then it is passed on to the so called "others" our mirrors in the daily life.
THEN ... once we become aware .... WE CAN CHOOSE if to FIGHT or to STOP and CREATE something completely new inside our self and around us.
IT IS THE SAME ENERGY ... with AWARENESS by becoming conscious on, we are able to bring that ENERGY to a different level, creative towards existence and we are part of it.
With Love and Peace

Shantaya, your prescription feels right on: Begin by bringing awareness to our conditioned mind and its "old ways" of being and thinking, "to recognize in our self where and when we divide and fight inside our heads." Then, begin to withdraw our compulsive projections we put on others. Then, realize we have a choice about how to direct our power and intelligence, to fight or to create. I visualize aiming a firehose...the energy is the same, and its up to us where, how, and in what way, we direct it.

A question that is not asked is what kind of leadership are we talking about? Most people seem to think political leadership is the only kind, and it is certainly the most visible- but on the other hand spiritual leadership is subtle and it seems often those individuals are not recognized by many.
So yes, it is a time to reexamine the role of leadership. We talk about the principle of leading by example, but rather than try and do that by adhering to a form of conduct we might just find some who are already living examples. If these people do not draw attention to themselves then it is up to us to recognize their leadership in the way they live their particular life.

Yes, I think you make a good point, Mark. I think one challenge is that when people think of spiritual leadership they might think conventional religious leadership, of established spiritual leadership that may not appeal. Or, that DOES appeal, and not think of a spiritual leader who leads by example, as you say...one who isn't necessarily invested in a traditional authoritary-figure role.
It seems to me that one of the hallmarks of our current age is that we are each being called to establish our own autonomous relationship to a higher intelligence, divinity, God, what-have-you. And in doing so this trend could be threatening to people or groups who continue to desire or promote the necessity of a spiritual intermediary, or who want to gain power or authority over others, formally or informally.
I like your point that authentic spiritual leadership is often subtle and not recognized by many. This does need to change.

Posted on behalf of Alicia Otis:
Old forms (thought forms as well as institutional) ie: religious, economic, political, racial, , financial; national identity moving into the reality of global oneness...Old forms breaking down now make way for a new page in world consciousness already in process. Resistance to consciousness moving toward its Source - Our Divine origin will bring untold suffering and the possible end to this civilization. The process is painful for many...Nobody said metamophosis was pretty or painless.

Change does not occur outside of ourself. It starts with each of us from within each one of us. Leadership also starts with each and everyone of us. We elected a President in this case and we must take ownership for casting the vote we made. The creation of change in the world comes first and foremost from within each one of us. We must all change ourself and then change the world around us, one person, one community, one country, one world at a time. NO one man can do it alone. President-elect Obama is a man dreaming a change but we must all do our part. Please feel free to blog me back through my website, One Community Programs

greetings.
there should not be fear or hate & one can see the change.
dislike the sin not sinner.
any leader dividing the society, by relgion or boundary is bound to doomed. let leader bring the positivity in human to work together & make this world as it was meant to be.
metta ~ may all beings be happy.

The recent US election brings hope, for sure.
Fir the first time, it is not a WASP at the head of the US.
It is a man, with african origins and roots.
Meanwhile, I question myself: was it easier to elect a "Black" than a woman? But this reflection might be influenced by what I saw in France (where N. Sarkozy was electd by people who where against his positions but couldn't vote for a woman).
I'm not taking anything away from the new president of the USA; I wish him full success. But one should not think that he can achieve the miracles that have been expected for so long and wash out several hundred years of history. I wish it was possible, but let's stay realistic. Once again, I wish him full success. But I won't blame him if he doesn't achieve everything he wishes (I'll stay by him, with my strongest support).
What does this election and its success tell us? That people -individually- are relieved to see that there is always hope.
The challenge is now, for each individual, to bring this experience back to his individual level: anyone of us has the possibility and the power to change SOMETHING.
Leadership?
Excuse me. Maybe because I'm not a US citizen, but I have always questionned and challenged the power of the USA over the world.
Why is it that one country needs to take leadership? Can't we all, as united nations, take care of our world, its people and whatever lives on earth, without converting it into power or dollars?
Cheers.

Elisabelle, I thank you, and everyone who has responded to this question so far. I hope there are more voices that make themselves heard!
Meanwhile, your point about leadership is well taken. I can see how the question might be read to imply that the US was the subject meant by the words "our leadership". That wasn't intended though. What we meant was "How much is change dependent upon our individual leadership (as people)?"
My own feeling resonates with yours, and Luca's, that leadership is increasingly and rapidly becoming distributed and leveled. It seems paradoxical at times, but in the process of taking personal responsibility we take responsibility for the world. And, en masse, we become an effective united nations.
I'm reminded of traditional top-down leadership in the form of western aid to developing countries, and how plopping down western technologies, even when seemingly "appropriate" and efficient, were often unsuccessful...and how it was only when western aid began to focus on empowering the indigenous peoples who best knew of the needs "on the ground" that real development could occur. Leadership became reframed from "I know best" to "How do we have to be to empower you and help you succeed?"
